For years, I stood on a regular bathroom scale every single day. I watched the number go up or down, and called that "health tracking."
It wasn't.
After nearly a decade in the fitness industry, having free access to an InBody and several years coaching people toward better health, I finally bought a GE Smart Body Fat Scale to have at home.
Apparently I've been measuring the least interesting thing on my body.
Fair warning...
This thing sends a tiny electrical current through your body every morning. Weird? Absolutely. Alarming? Not at all.

THE FIRST WEIGH-IN
The first time I stepped on it, I expected... Weight. Instead, it handed me what felt like my annual performance review.
Weight.
Body fat.
Muscle mass.
Body water.
Bone mass.
Visceral fat.
BMI.
BMR.
Metabolic age.
At one point I expected it to ask if I'd flossed recently. 😂
THE OLD SCALE....
A regular scale measures gravity's opinion of your body. That's it. It can't tell whether you gained five pounds of muscle or five pounds of cheesecake. It's just... "Yep. You're heavier." Thanks, Captain Obvious.
The sci-fi part...
Then I discovered it sends electricity through your feet.
Excuse me?
I literally froze. I had visions of Doc Brown yelling, "1.21 gigawatts!"
Turns out...
You don't feel a thing. It's using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), which is just a fancy way of saying electricity moves differently through muscle than fat.
Science is weird. And kind of amazing.
THE PHONE STORY
The app wants your phone nearby so it can sync your results.
Naturally... I stood on the scale holding my phone. Nope. Apparently my phone weighs 4 ounces! Now I set my phone on the floor beside the scale so they can talk to each other.
In my head, they're like two little cousins catching up.
Scale:
"She had barbecue."
Phone:
"I know."
Scale:
"And potato chips."
Phone:
"Already logged it."
😂😂😂
THEN CAME METABOLIC AGE...
One number completely caught me off guard.
Metabolic Age.
According to my scale...
...after one particularly enthusiastic barbecue dinner...
...my metabolic age went up.
By a year. ONE WHOLE YEAR. Um, excuse me???
I looked down at the scale and said,
"Listen...
we both know that I had watermelon too. 'Cmon."
🤣🤣🤣
Now...
Before you panic...
One dinner didn't actually age me.
These numbers naturally move around based on things like hydration, sodium, and timing.
That's exactly why they're useful as trends, not daily report cards.
Still... The next morning the vegetables suddenly looked a lot more appealing.
WHAT SURPRISED ME MOST
The biggest surprise wasn't my weight.
It was realizing how much attention I'd been giving the least interesting number on the scale.
For years I'd step on...
Look at one number..
Decide whether I should feel good or bad about myself...
And measured my success based on whether I was in a healthy BMI range.
Now I ask different questions.
Am I building muscle?
Is my visceral fat improving?
Am I staying hydrated?
Am I moving in the right direction overall?
The scale didn't change my health. It changed the questions I ask. And I think that's the real magic.
MY TAKEAWAY
I still weigh myself every morning. I just don't let one pound ruin my day anymore. I'm watching trends. Not chasing perfection. But I am following the advice of the scale and weighing before breakfast.
Because here's what I've learned...
The metrics we measure influence the decisions we make.
Maybe that's true in business.
Maybe it's true in relationships.
It's definitely true in health.
My old scale measured my weight.
My new scale measures everything...except my self-worth.
I appreciate that.
CURIOUS ABOUT YOUR OWN METABOLIC HEALTH?
A smart scale is one tool—but it's only one piece of the picture. If you've been wondering where to start, I'd love to help.
Because feeling healthier has never been about chasing one number.
It's about understanding the whole picture.
